National Palace Museum, Taiwan -- Formerly the imperial collection, the National Palace Museum officially opened on October 10, 1925 in Beijing. Due, however, to the vagaries of the Sino-Japanese War and the Chinese Civil War, the collection was divided and hid in southern China. Reunited after the war, it once again moved when the Communists forced the Nationalist government to flee to Taiwan. The 15,000 crates of art works did not find a permanent home until 1965 when the present museum was built in Waishuanghsi, a suburb of Taipei. Its collections are particularly strong in paintings, ceramics, jades, bronzes, and rare books and documents.
