Amida Trust -- Amida Trust is gathering a corps of people seriously interested in developing humanitarian projects on Buddhist principles to help overcome suffering in the world. Amida Trust is a Buddhist trust that has grown out of the work of David Brazier and Caroline Brazier and a number of people associated with them trying to apply the principles of mindful living and universal compassion to life in the contemporary world. David and Caroline are disciples of the Vietnamese Buddhist master Thich Nhat Hanh who is well-known for his work for peace and reconcilation in his own war torn country as well as for being a much loved interpreter of Buddhist teachings to western audiences. The Trust also has good relations with other Zen schools, with the Pure Land Fellowship and with Theravada and Tibetan groups. Trust members include followers of many different spiritual paths in Britain and overseas.
Buddhist AIDS Project -- Based in San Francisco, California. Provides free information and referral to Buddhist resources and events and to current HIV/AIDS information and alternative medical services. An all-volunteer, non-profit Affiliate of the Buddhist Peace Fellowship(BPF), BAP serves anyone living with HIV/AIDS, including family, friends, caregivers and people who are HIV negative.
National Buddhist Prison Sangha - Zen Mountain Monastery Prison Progarm -- Nationwide network of Buddhist volunteers who make themselves available to interested inmates in their area. Depending on their experience with practice, as well as their time and personal resources, these volunteers may provide support through correspondence, visits, the creation and leading of practice groups, and more. Zen Mountain Monastery provides orientation and guidance when necessary. Begun in 1984 with the request of a NY State prison inmate to start a practice group within the prison. This resulted in a court battle that reached the NY State Supreme Court and resulted in the formation of the first Zen practice group in the NY State Correctional Facilities. Since that time Zen Mountain Monastery has been actively involved in working with Buddhist inmates both within New York State and across the U.S.
Zen Environmental Studies Center -- Formed in 1992 to coordinate Zen Mountain Monastery''s activities in the areas of environmental education, recreation, research, and protection. Ongoing educational activities include the Monastery''s Born as the Earth program, which features on-site retreats on topics such as Tracking, Nature Writing, Canoeing and Camping, Rock Climbing, Birds, and Deep Ecology, and Environmental Activism, the moral and ethical basis of Buddhist ecology.
Zen Hospice Project -- A program of the San Francisco Zen Center, serving people facing death from cancer, AIDS and other illnesses.
Zen Practice for Inmates -- Meditation training as an alternative to conventional sentencing. During the past year a "scholarship" fund has been created to assist serious inmate practitioners in attending a monastic training period on parole or at release from prison. The Engaged Zen Foundation intends to establish a monastic-based alternative sentencing facility where offenders may serve out sentences in a highly disciplined Zendo atmosphere.
